Ivan Hilary Barnes was born on 19 June 1911 in Barraba, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of George Barnes, who was 38 years old at the time of Ivan’s birth, and Lucy Barnes, who was 32. Ivan spent his early years in rural New South Wales during a period of significant change as Australia developed in the early twentieth century.
In 1943, Ivan married Elizabeth Rose Anderson in Randwick, New South Wales. Their marriage took place during the Second World War, and together they established a family, raising two sons, Terence Barnes (adopted) and Michael Barnes. The family lived in New South Wales, where they built their lives and contributed to their local community.
Elizabeth was born in 1910 in Campbelltown, New South Wales. She was the daughter of Thomas Anderson, aged 31 at the time of her birth, and Elizabeth Anderson, aged 36. She shared more than three decades of married life with Ivan before her death on 2 June 1977 in Sydney at the age of 67. She was buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
Following Elizabeth’s passing, Ivan continued to live in Sydney. He died on 17 February 1993 at the age of 81 and was also buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
