He was an underwriter at Lloyds of London and was primarily an entomologist as well as a botanist. He was president of the Entomological Society on two occasions, 1841-1842 and 1856 - 1857. His botanical contributions include: Refugium Bo tanicum, 1868-73; Mycological Illustrations, 1871-2. Potentilla saundersiana Royle is named after him. William Wilson Saunders died in Worthing, Sussex, 13 September 1879. There are specimens in the Bromfield Herbarium collected by William Wilso n Saunders between 1840-1842 from Battersea, Wandsworth and Oxon W.W. Saunders was the second son of James Saunders, vicar of Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, and was born at Little London, near Wendover, Bucks. He later (from c.1831) resided at East Hil l, Wandsworth and (from 1857) at Reigate, Surrey, retiring finally to Worthing in 1874. Details of his career may be found in the D.N.B. article where it is stated that "Few contributed more to the advancement of entomology and botany".
