| 446 | Isabelle was employed as the Assistant Matron of the Female Factory at Parramatta. This facility was established to house the single female convicts.It was described as a hot bed of depravity and a finishing school of vice. The position of Supervi sion was normally given to thee wives of soldiers who were station near by. She was in charge of that part of the factory dealing with third class inmates those that had been returned from ticket of leave or convicted for the first time in the col ony for committing crimes.These convicts suffered the indignity of having their hair shorn short. There were a number of problems during the period that she was at the factory. In October 1832 there was a near riot, in October 1827 Feburary 1831 a nd Mach 1833 riots did occur. There were also complaints against the matron and there fore possibly Isabelle.These complaints were investigated and dismissed. There was some 200 inmates in this factory in 1822 and by 1842 over 1000. At all period s during the progress of the colony , and up to 1835 single men could obtain wifes on application from amongs the female convicts. Her name appears in Government Gazettes 5 time during 1838. It was for 14/11/1838 Arrested,9/10/1838 absconding, 24/ 10/1838 Arrest,27 11/1838 absconding and 5/12/1838 Arrest. She also appears in the index to the Colonial Secretary correspondence 1832-1837 FROM THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD Thursday 30/7/1854 Page 5 column Death by Burning on Monday a fatal acciden t happen near East Maitland to an elderly lady, the wife otf a veteran named Kingaby an old resident.Both Kingaby and his wife had been drinking that morning and while Kingaby went away to town to buy some more liquor, his wife who was quite drun k laid down near a fire. Buring in the fire place was around log, it is supposed the this log must have rolled off and fallen against the unfortuate ladies dress. when her husband returned he saw smoke and hastening off he found his wife in flame d with her clothes nearly all burnt off. Neighbours rushed to help him and medical assistance was obtained but the injuries were fatal and Mrs Kingaby died yesterday. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon on the body by Mr Parker and a verdict r eturned of death from injuries by her clothes taking fire while she was intoxicated. | Ardry, Isabella (I1130)

| 447 | James Freesone was baptised on Sunday 3rd May 1818 at St. Peter's Church of England in Oadby, Leicester. He was the son of John Freeston and Mary (unknow). Johns parents were John Freeston and Elizabeth Crain who had married on 12th March 1787 a t Oadby, John was born on the 30th December 1788. James baptism states that his father was a weaver, and his indent states he was a weaver also, no doubt apprenticed to his father. On the 21st March 1835 James committed a felony, which was to lead to his transportation from England to Botany Bay for 14 Years. His crime "larceny on a canal" stealing one cwt. of bones the property of James Skelton, along with John Cornish. A t the Easter Sessions in 1834 James was sentenced to three months hard labour, he had been privately whipped twice. James was convicted more than once, charged with breaking into a shop with Timothy Terry, and Jo West stealing 70 knives James Free stone pleaded guilty and West not guilty. The Transportation Register (HO/11/10) states that James and John were transported to the Colony on 7th September 1836 on the John Barry (4) arriving on 17 January 1836. James masters were Henry and David Perrier at Bathurst, John Cornish was sen t to George Druitt at Penrith. On 16th July 1844 James received his Ticket of Leave, Number 44/1843, he did not apply for his Ticket of Freedom. James left Bathurst, the year is not known, but on 24th February 1851 he married, in Muswellbrook, a 16 -year- old Irish Orphan fro m Ennis in Country Clare. Ann died aged only 31 years, on 3rd January 1866, and then on 14th April, James married an Irish widow Alice Fitzpatrick, who had an 11-year-old son. Sadly her son was found dead on the Frogmore Road, Burrowa on 29th December 1886 from the effect s of drink and exposure, he was not married. James died on 20th March 1885, and is buried at Goorangoola, Singleton, with Ann. Alice died on 16th November 1880 and is also buried at Goorangoola. | Freestone, James (I46)

| 448 | John Freestone married Jane Polson on the 24th October 1887 at St. Mark's Church Laguna, the ceremony was conducted by Popham Luscombe, and the witnesses John A Wiseman and Catherine Polson. John and Jane lived on Portion No. 22 in the Parish of Y ango the Country of Northumberland, the land belonged to Jane's father Thomas Polson, the remains of the house can still be seen today. On the 14th July 1892 John applied for a grant of land by Conditional Sale an area of 112 acres, Portions No. 1 7 and 70 in the Parish of Halloran and the Country of Darling, and the land district of Tamworth. | Freestone, John (I5)

| 450 | John Wilson Saunders married Vashti Duncombe on the 17th January 1893 in Tamworth, there were three children from the marriage Isa Mary, Ernest Winter and Jessie Winifred. On the 5th October 1904 Vashti Duncombe filed for a dissolution of the marr iage from John Wilson Saunders on the grounds of Adultery. Notes [13/12608] 5158 of 1904: During the month of February 1904 John Wilson Saunders committed adultery with Eliza Johnson at Newcastle and at Woods Reef between the months of February 19 04 and September 1904 and John Wilson Saunders cohabited continuously with Eliza Johnson and lived with her as her Husband. The marriage was dissolved by decree of the Supreme Court of NSW on the 12th January 1907. On the 30 December 1983 a Mrs C.
