Herbert Joseph Thomas Stein was born in 1914 in Tamworth, New South Wales, the son of Sidney Stein and Ethel. He married Elsie Eveline Saunders on 5 May 1937 in Barraba, New South Wales. Together they raised two children, Harold John Stein and Barbara Joan Stein.
Herbert spent most of his life in the Barraba district, where he and Elsie made their home and raised their family. He died on 9 August 1987 in Barraba at the age of 73 and was laid to rest in the Barraba Cemetery.
Elsie remained in New South Wales following Herbert’s death. She died on 16 October 2013 at the age of 97 and was buried beside her husband in Barraba Cemetery.
