Elsie Eveline (Saunders) Stein
Elsie Eveline Saunders was born on 10 July 1916 in Barraba, New South Wales, to John Wilson Saunders, aged 46, and Eliza May Johnson, aged 31. She grew up in Barraba and, on 5 May 1937, married Herbert Joseph Thomas Stein in her hometown.
Herbert was born in 1914 in Tamworth, New South Wales, the son of Sidney Herbert Stein, aged 20, and Ethel May Jordan, aged 23. Following their marriage, Herbert and Elsie made their home in Barraba, where they raised their family and became well-known members of the local community.
They had two children:
Harold John Stein, born in 1939, who married Helen Louisa Groth. They had two sons together. Harold remained closely connected to the Barraba district throughout his life. He died on 9 July 2022 in New South Wales at the age of 83 and was buried in Barraba Cemetery.
Barbara Joan Stein, who married Warren John Brodbeck in 1960 in Barraba, New South Wales. They had one son, Grahame Warren Brodbeck, who was born in 1961. Tragically, Grahame died on 27 March 1987 in New South Wales at the age of 26 and was buried in Richmond Cemetery, New South Wales.
Herbert Joseph Thomas Stein died on 9 August 1987 in Barraba, New South Wales, at the age of 73 and was buried in Barraba Cemetery.
Elsie remained in Barraba for the rest of her life. She died on 16 October 2013 at the age of 97 and was laid to rest beside her husband in Barraba Cemetery.
Together, Herbert and Elsie left a lasting family legacy through their children, grandchildren, and descendants, with the Stein and Brodbeck families continuing to be remembered as part of Barraba’s history.
